Thank you to all the artists and patrons who joined us for the 57th Annual Mystic Outdoor Art Festival on August 9th and 10th. New this year, on Saturday, August 9th, we celebrated this year’s festival with a casual yet sophisticated “White Linen Night” cocktail party. The concept for a White Linen event, which originated in New Orleans, is to get the community involved in local arts and out of the house during the long, hot days of summer. The event took place at the Mystic Arts Center, 9 Water Street. Music, wine and hors d’oeuvres were provided for the guests dressed in casual white and cool colors of the summer.

In 1957, Milton Baline and several other local business owners and art lovers proposed that Mystic pattern a festival after the famous Washington Square Festival in New York. That first show featured 105 artists and 500 paintings. Between 4,000 and 6,000 visitors came to admire and purchase art. Today the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival stretches over two miles and is the oldest of its kind in the Northeast. In fifty-five years, the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival has grown to over 250 artists who come from all corners of the United States and bring more than 100,000 works of art.
As the years go on, the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival is keeping its feet firmly planted in the area. Community pride is seen in the donations of time from over 100 volunteers and the donations of money and services from the local businesses. Local non-profit organizations, such as the Mystic Rotary Club, Coastal Masonic Lodge #57 and Boy Scout Troop #76 offer food and drink for sale to raise money for their organizations.

The Children’s Art Park is a great way for you and your children to make some art of your own during the event! Make sure to visit the Mystic River Park on the Stonington side of the river for a variety of activities including face painting, fish prints, bubbles, hula hoops, bean bag toss, funny photo boards and nautical knot tying as well as activities led by area museums and cultural centers.
